About 45 minutes outside of Salzburg by train is the village of Werfen. It is an amazing setting with mountains towering overhead, and in the center of it all is a 900 year old castle. The castle was closed to the public until 1987, when it was converted from a police school to the museum that it is now.
After a very steep, much-longer-than anticipated walk to the entrance, we made it into the castle. They were having a Kinder Fest, so there were special games for Nikolas to play which made him very happy. The castle is also home of the first Austrian Falcon Museum and houses falcons and eagles from all over the world with flight demonstrations (which we missed) for visitors. It was a spectacular excursion!
